Casting Date
Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails.

Casting Date Example: E038 - (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Engine

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

VIN Code Format
The vin code format is stamped onto most engines. The format consists of divisional identification number, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle serial or sequence number.
In 68-69 model cars, the serial (VIN) number of the car the engine was installed in is stamped next to, or under the engine code ID.
Starting in 1970, the serial number is stamped either above the oil filter, somewhere on the block pad (in front of the cylinder head), or on the transmission flange somewhere. Chevrolet issued technical service bulletins to indicate which engines were to recieve a vin stamp, so who knows what could have happend (or not happened).

VIN code format Example: 13N100001
(1 = Chevrolet, 3 = 1973, N = Norwood, 100001 = Production sequence of vehicle VIN)

Engine Block Casting Numbers

Notes (for below): 'High Power' is the maximum rate HP this block was used for, 'Low Power' is the lowest rated horsepower RPO engine the block was used in. 'Main Caps' is the number of bolts holding the cap. A 'two-bolt' main, or a four-bolt main. Four bolt main blocks are desirable in high performance applications because the extra strength of the additional bolts keeps the bottom end rigid and less prone to failure. However, a properly prepared 2 bolt main engine will work just fine (often times you'll lose a rod bolt before you break a crank because it's 'only' a 2 bolt main).

Written for the VetteNet

Info From: Mike 'Doc' Cobine - Procrastination Racing
Updated 3/24/08
Copyright © 1996 - 2008 VetteNet and all authors as listed.
This is a survey of CE Blocks in Chevrolet cars, with the main interest in Corvettes. However, information of these blocks in other cars, such as the Camaro, may help establish a pattern in Corvettes. Please take the time to fill in the following information and submit it.
Most of this is optional. Enter whatever information you feel comfortable giving. This will not be released until enough is gathered to establish a pattern of how CE Blocks were installed. Then only installation statistics, not personal information.
With the new information (below), I doubt we find any pattern, unless it is that they ran 100 327-300 hp, then 100 327-350hp, etc. or some such thing like that. However, it is still worth a try.
I'm sure we will discover questions we forgot to ask. As such, your contact information will be our only way to get back in touch and ask those new questions. Most likely, it will be by email only.
One last note: While I appreciate the efforts from many, the CE Block was always stamped with CE and a number, such as 'CE012345'. Engines stamped with F1204RF or T0123IM are not CE Blocks. They may be a replacement, and they may have even been installed by a dealer, but the CE Block has the CE first, not last. There may be a VIN number stamped in, as some dealers appear to have done so.

The New Stuff

I've received a few messages form several to the issue of the CE Block and being a warranty only item. Their consensus is that they were NOT warranty items. One person worked for Chevy at the time and had a TSB that spelled out what they were and how to handle them.
One place to see this information is http://www.camaros.org/engine.shtml#ReplacementEngines.
Apparently, they were simply the new numbering system that Chevy used on all service replacement engine assemblies beginning April 1969, whether short-block, long-block, or whole.
The C stands for Chevrolet, E stands for Engine (T would be Transmission), and the first number is the year. then there is a serial number for the engine, based on the xxxth engine that year. The serial is 20,000 to 49,999 for Flint and 50,000 to 79,999 for Tonawanda. For example, CE950327 is a Chevrolet engine from Tonawanda for 1969 and was the 327th produced, not that it was a 327. (It could be, but that would be an incredible coincidence.)
Also, some include a letter in the number sequence, such as CE9A50327. The 'A' indicates the second pass through the numbers, as the sequence only allows for 30,000 engines. That means that CE950000 through CE979999 were built, then they began CE9A50000 through CE9A79999. Then they went to CE9B50000 and so on. They built a lot more than they originally anticipated.
While this new information eliminates them as warranty-only items, it does not eliminate them from being warranty items. What is meant by service replacement may be a clue. That is why the old stuff, of questionable value now, is still below. Also, with the price of a new assembly from Chevy at several hundred dollars, and a whole engine in a junkyard or from some guy around town at $50 to $100, it is easy to see that in a time of $50 a week paychecks that most blowing an engine would NOT buy a new engine from Chevy. As such, those new ones going in were probably still more rare than most want to believe, and odds are that most were warranty items, simply due to costs.

The Old Stuff

The general consensus between many on VetteNet and other places is that the CE Block was a warranty-only item. However, thanks to restoration efforts by NCRS and Bloomington Gold, many CE Blocks have been pulled out of their cars and replaced with a 'correct' block, so that the cars are 'restored' and history is destroyed.
One other item that seems to crop up is that sometimes the CE Block appears as a short block (block, pistons, crank, etc.) and other times as a long block (with heads). No one has mentioned getting one as a complete engine, however, if the CE is truly a warranty item, then that is probably normal as the dealer would reuse as many non-damaged parts from the original engine as possible. Rarely does a blown original engine destroy the intake manifold and carburetor.
